Things To Do in Hoi An, Vietnam’s Most Charming Town • Indie Traveller

Ask any first-time traveler in Vietnam what their favorite place was and chances are they’ll say… Hoi An!

It’s easy to see why. Its well-preserved heritage architecture and colorful lanterns giving it an irresistible charm. There’s virtually no high-rise commercial development and much of the town is kept free of motorized traffic. To top it off, the beach is just 5km (3 miles) away.

Backpackers like Hoi An. Couples on a Vietnam holiday like it. Digital nomads like it. And you, probably, will like it too.

But since everyone seems to like Hoi An, it can also get very busy.

It’s a lovely place, but don’t expect to be alone. Pictures of deserted streets and serene empty temples are not exactly representative. The Old Town’s main streets are often overrun, especially when day-trippers from Da Nang fill the streets. Snarls of cyclos carrying mainly Chinese tourists have added to the congestion in recent years.
